General process of CO2 recovery system

The CO2 recovery line consists of a defoamer, scrubber, gas holder, oil-free piston CO2 compressor, drying columns, purification and adsorption columns, a cooling system based on a screw compressor and a closed-type cooling tower, a final CO2 purification system based on a condenser and a distillation column, cryogenic tanks for CO2 accumulation and storage, a pumping station for refueling CO2 tanker trucks, etc.

CO2 Compressor

The CO2 compressor is a two-stage, oil-free piston compressor mounted on a frame, which is equipped with an independent intercooler and an aftercooler and an automatic condensate drain system.

At the same time, the compressor load control device is controlled depending on the filling status of the gas container.

Activated carbon filter, H2S filter

The adsorption filter consists of two parallel adsorption towers filled with activated carbon or H2S adsorbent.

The parallel adsorption towers are automatically switched between operation and regeneration using pneumatic valves, solenoid valves and PLC. 

The activated carbon filter removes sulfides, ethanol and odor. The filter with H2S adsorbent provides additional ultra-deep and ultra-fine purification to ensure food-grade CO2 parameters. 

Two towers operate alternately: one adsorption tower operates while the other is being regenerated. 

Adsorption towers are installed on racks and consist of:

  • Adsorption tower housing 
  • Adsorbent (activated carbon) or H2S adsorbent
  • Pneumatic ball valve
  • Manometer
  • Electric heater
  • Electric contact thermometer

Drying unit

The drying unit consists of two parallel tower bodies with drying agents inside. The two-tower structure automatically switches between operation and regeneration periodically, with one tower operating while the other is regenerating. The dryer removes moisture from the CO2 gas (using molecular sieves or activated alumina), and the CO2 after deep drying has a pressure dew point of -60℃. 

The molecular sieve is heated by an electric heater during regeneration, and the CO2 enters the activated carbon after blowing out of the dryer. The regeneration gas is regenerated using the non-condensable gas from the CO2 condenser. The dryer and adsorber use electric heating for automatic operation.

The drying unit includes: 

  • Two drying towers with uniform gas distribution

CO2 Evaporative Condenser

CO2 evaporative condenser is a shell-and-tube heat exchanger. 

The shell-and-tube heat exchanger contains CO2 gas, and the tube-and-tube heat exchanger contains R507A refrigerant, which is supplied by the refrigeration unit. The R507A refrigerant, compressed by the refrigeration unit, expands through an expansion valve into the tube section of the CO2 evaporative condenser, where it absorbs heat and evaporates. 

The inclined evaporative condenser is equipped with an automatic CO2 discharge system with a timer, which effectively discharges non-condensable gases such as O2 and N2, ensuring complete purification. 

CO2 absorbs cold energy in the shell-and-tube section and liquefies. The liquefied CO2 enters the liquefied CO2 storage tank.

Analysis of raw or unpurified gas

For the correct design of the equipment and the purification process, the first step is the analysis of the raw gas. We perform an extensive list of analyses of the raw CO2 gas to prevent any "surprises" after the launch of our projects. We carry out the analysis in our German laboratory according to this list of parameters.
