How does the SCR system work with AdBlue®?
For many truck drivers or diesel car owners, AdBlue® is a familiar fluid. But how exactly does it work in the SCR system?
Here’s how it works:
* AdBlue® is injected into the exhaust stream of the diesel engine before it reaches the catalyst.
* Under high temperatures, AdBlue® breaks down into ammonia (NH₃) and carbon dioxide (CO₂).
* Inside the catalyst, the ammonia reacts with nitrogen oxides (NOx) — the main harmful components of diesel exhaust.
* As a result of this reaction, NOx is converted into harmless nitrogen (N₂) and water (H₂O).
This allows vehicles to meet stringent Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards and reduces harmful emissions by up to 90%.
Important: AdBlue® is not mixed with fuel — it’s a separate system with its own tank, sensors, and control units.
